2022 Hall of Fame Inductee: Larry Amar

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Throughout the month of March, USA Field Hockey will be celebrating and honoring the 2022 Hall of Fame Inductees prior to the 100th Anniversary and Hall of Fame Celebration, hosted by the U.S. Field Hockey Foundation.
An Atlanta 1996 Olympian, Larry Amar represented the United States as an athlete and a member of the U.S. Army. He is a true American legend and hero.
Amar stood out as a player atan early age, having first represented with the U.S. Men’s National Team at the age of 16. He was also one of the few players to ever represent all three squads at the same time, playing on the U-18 USMNT, U-21 USMNT and senior USMNT concurrently. A native of California, he was part of the U.S. Men’s National Team programs from 1987-1999 and competed in more than 200 international matches. Those included multiple tours, Junior World Cup, World Cup Qualifiers, 1991 and 1995 Pan American Games and the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. He served as captain of the U-21 USMNT and senior USMNT. Also serving as captain of Team USA at the Atlanta Olympic Games, Larry was a two-time recipient of the USA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year Award in 1994 and 1995
Following his playing days, Larry was a member of the U.S. Army for six years, serving two tours overseas. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Infantry. Larry received two Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals among his numerous honors and achievements.
In February 2019, Larry brought his coaching expertise back to USA Field Hockey as the USWNT assistant coach, where he helped the team throughout the inaugural season of the FIH Hockey Pro League. It was a position he held dear, often saying it was an honor to be a mentor to some of the highest performing athletes in the United States. In 2020, Larry transitioned to the position of U.S. National Teams Manager where he worked with both the USWNT and USMNT.
Two years have passed since the tragic passing of USA Field Hockey Family's beloved Larry. Although he is no longer with us in person, Larry’s legacy continues to live on through the athletes he coached, mentors he inspired, and friends and family he loved.
“Larry is so deserving in his induction to the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame,” said Simon Hoskins, USA Field Hockey’s Executive Director. “Captain of the U.S. Men's National Team at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, over 200 appearances as an athlete and he also served as a National Team coach and manager. Larry was always ready to give back to the game at every level, inspiring so many people in field hockey.”
Larry is truly worthy of induction in the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame.
